Chapter 11: Non-ficiton


Non-fiction must contain facts because it is based on real events. Non-fiction includes narrative and expository approaches and under this genre falls autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs. A variety of texts fall under the realm of nonfiction. Nonfiction are books that teach, inform, and explain. Non-fiction depicts reality in how people overcome challenges and become successful and are an inspiration to others. Therefore, non-fiction can be used for motivational purposes for young adults and young adults should be encouraged to read the variety from this genre.

Chapter 12: Fantasy/Science Fiction


If stories break the law of physical reality, then they fall into the genre of Fantasy fiction. Universal themes can be found within Fantasy/Science Fiction. All of science fiction falls under fantasy. But certain types of fantasies do not fall under Science Fiction.  Fantasy Science/Fiction can be used to motivate young adult readers to use their imagination. Young Adult readers should be inspired to read the ideas portrayed in these types of books.

Chapter 13: Graphic Novels




Graphic Novels (GN) are a form or format but not a genre. Fantasy, history, nonfiction, and all the sub genres can be Graphic Novels. Graphic Novels tell stories through dialogue and visual images. GN consists of cover and inside pages. Pages consists of panels, gutters, dialogue balloons, thought balloons, captions, and sound effects. They are read left to right. There are different types of Graphic Novels and can be categorized in different ways. Graphic Novels can be for all elementary, secondary, and adults and not just for learning but for enjoyment. They can promote motivation and have benefits for students with special needs such as dyslexia, ELL, and LEP, other reading difficulties. Graphic Novels can be integrated into the curriculum and have been reported by educators as a great success.
