Chapter 2: Divisions of Young People’s
Literature
Within each division there is
an appropriate age level and lists of appropriate reading selections. The
following list defines the divisions: Children’s Literature (ages 0-8 years),
Middle Grade/Tween (ages 8-12 years), Middle School (ages 11-13), Young Adult
(ages 13-18 years), and New Adult (ages 18-30 years). People tend to often confuse middle grade for
middle school. But as discussed in this chapter, the divisions are defined in
terms of ages. Being aware of the
specific divisions is very important because it will aid in the process of
choosing the appropriate reading selections for each division. As discussed in
the chapter, students want to read more mature YA literature that is not
appropriate in which makes it a challenge. Therefore, having this division
helps to determine the appropriate books for the appropriate age.
