Chapter 8: Poetry

Poetry can be a form of literature, but is not a genre.  It can be found in many different genres. Poems tell a story and create a visual image for the reader. As mentioned in the video a research study was done by giving kids different kinds of poetry to see what they preferred. It showed that kids prefer poems that tell a story (narrative poems). Two types of poems they dislike are free verse and haiku. Kids love alliteration, funny poems, poems that they can have familiar experiences with, animal poems, and contemporary poems which are more familiar and something they recognize. Having readers develop an appreciation for poetry that has no rhyme is the real challenge.  A good poem should allow readers to interact and join in.
