Chapter 6: Literary Elements

Literary Elements and literary devices are very important and it is imperative that we as professional librarians have a thorough understanding of them to teach students. Literary elements such as setting, character, protagonists, antagonist, conflict, plot, mood & tone and literary devices such as hyperbole, imagery, metaphor, point of view, simile, symbolism, etc. are essential for the professional school librarian to be aware, of and fully comprehend. Young adult readers need to be able to have knowledge of these terms as well and recognize them so they can be able to comprehend as they read and get the author’s message. A book can have more than one theme as mentioned in this chapter.
