4. What is YA Literature?

Chapter 4:  What is YA Literature?

Young Adult (YA) literature involves a young protagonist who is highly independent. The protagonist in YA literature goes through a life changing event during the period of time where the story takes place. During the story the reader can see gradual and incremental changes in the main character as well as incomplete growth.  YA literature is written from an adolescent viewpoint. The reader can identify with the characters.  The content of YA literature usually focuses on contemporary issues that affect adolescence today. Having YA literature knowledge helps in evaluating this type of literature.
