1. Why do we Share Literature with Children

Chapter 1:  Why do we share literature with children?

There are many reasons why we share literature with children. The foundation of all learning is reading and sharing literature helps to develop a lifelong learning among children.  Reading promotes student achievement, it aids in language development and acquisition, it promotes higher-order thinking skills and allows children to develop their imaginations.  In addition, not only do they learn academically, but it also encourages social growth and development.  This chapter discusses the importance of having diverse reading experiences especially at an early age.  This chapter’s information gives me a better understanding on how to evaluate YA literature. I must be receptive to each child’s reading experiences and awareness of literature. It is very important to share YA literature with adolescents whether it is for joy or learning. Reading not only opens up a world of imagination, adventure, diversity, or information but it can also be a life changing experience.
